Notice: Face Covering Ordinance effective August 18, 2020

LAKE WALES – At its regular meeting on August 18, 2020, the City of Lake Wales City Commission approved Ordinance 2020-15, referred to as the Face Covering Ordinance, which requires the wearing of face coverings for anyone in indoor public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. The Ordinance will remain in effect until a repealing Ordinance is passed.

The Commission defines a face covering as a uniform piece of material that securely covers a person's nose and mouth and remains affixed in place without the use of one's hands, whether store-bought or homemade. Examples of compliant homemade masks may be found at

The City’s intent is to seek voluntary compliance with the provisions of Ordinance 2020-15 and to educate and warn of the dangers of noncompliance. In the event of noncompliance, the Lake Wales Police Department is empowered to investigate any situation where a business/person is alleged to be violating this ordinance. The Lake Wales Police Department is authorized to issue a noncriminal civil citation as provided in § 162.21, Florida Statutes:

 Initial warning for a first offense
 A civil fine of $50.00 for a second offense
 A civil fine of $100.00 for a third offense

Keep in mind that any individual you observe not wearing a mask may qualify for one of the exemptions, a full list of the exemptions can be found at Stay at least 6-feet away from people who are not wearing face coverings. You can call or talk to the business about your concerns if you see staff or customers who are not wearing face coverings in indoor public settings while not social distancing. Do not confront or start an argument with other individuals.
