  • If you are an active general employee in regular full-time position in the City, including those in their initial probationary employment period, but not including police officers and firefighters, but shall include civilian, clerical, and other employees of the police and fire departments.

    A full time employee shall be deemed to be one whose customary employment is for 20 or more hours per week. Employees in pay grades 200-300 can elect to participate in the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan (401a).

  • You may retire at any time after you have reached the age 60 with 10 years of credited service.

  • The amount of normal retirement annual pension is 2.5% for each year of credited service times your Final Average Earnings.

    Final Average Earnings is the average compensation received by a general employee during the period of 5 consecutive calendar years, which produces the highest average annual compensation.

    For example, if your Final Average Earnings are $30,000 and you retire with 25 years of credited service, the annual pension would be $18,750 (25 x 2.5% x $30,000).

  • Earnings means that base salary paid to you for personal services rendered to the City. Earnings include regular pay and amounts paid for shift differential, overtime, longevity pay, sick, vacation, personal leave, holiday pay, compensatory time, etc.

  • You can retire with an early retirement pension if you reach age 55 with 10 years of credited service.

  • An early retirement pension is computed the same way as a normal retirement pension; based on your Final Average Earnings and credited service at the time of retirement. However, the amount is reduce by 1/15 for each of the first 2.5 years, and 1/30 for each of the next 2.5 years.

    For example, if retiring at age 55 and 15.4778 years of service with Final Average Earnings of $23,646.89, your pension would be reduced: (YOS) 15.4778 X .025 X $23,646.89 X .5417 = $4,956.58 (annual benefit.)

  • Upon your retirement, pension benefits will be paid monthly only for as long as you live unless another option is selected. This form of payment is called Life Annuity.

  • Yes, instead of the Life Annuity option, you can provide protection for a survivor pension beneficiary by selection other optional forms of payment. These optional forms of payment are computed to be the actuarial equivalent of the Life Annuity option pension. This means all of the optional forms of payment have the same cost to the Retirement Plan at the time you retire. They are made available as a convenience to you in planning your personal retirement program.

    Once pension payments start, you cannot change the optional form of payment or your survivor pension beneficiary.

  • If you terminate City employment (other than by death or disability) after you have completed 10 or more years of credited service, but have not reached the required age, and you leave your accumulated contributions in the Plan, you will be eligible for a deferred pension. Your pension would be based on your final average earnings, credited service and benefit provisions in effect at the time you leave City employment. In order to begin receiving a pension, you must submit a written application the Plan Administrator upon reaching your early or normal retirement date.

    If you elect a refund of accumulated member contributions (including interest) after termination of employment or if your assets are transferred to the Defined Contribution Plan, you will forfeit your right to any pension from the Defined Benefit Plan.

  • No, the beneficiary of a member who dies before receiving monthly benefits shall receive a refund of 100% of the total contributions made by the member, with simple interest.

  • Each member with 10 years of credited service who is determined by the Social Security Administration to qualify for social security disability benefits, shall, after such determination, be entitled to a monthly disability pension equal to the actuarial equivalent of the member's accrued retirement pension as of the date benefits commence.

  • Both you and the City of Lake Wales contribute toward the cost of pension benefits. Your current contribution is 5% of your salary. The City contributes actuarially determined amounts required to maintain the pension plan in sound condition as required by state law.

  • Yes, the years that an employee served on active duty in the military service of the Armed Forces of the United States or the United States Merchant Marine, voluntarily or involuntarily, honorably or under honorable conditions, prior to employment with the City can be added to the member's years of credited service. The employee has to contribute to the fund the sum that the employee would have contributed, based on the employee's salary and the contribution rate in effect at the time that the credited service is requested, had the employee been a member of the retirement system. All costs associated with the purchase of prior military service is paid solely by the employee.

  • In all cases, the responsible party (Respondent) must be provided notice of the violation. They must also be provided with a reasonable time period in which to correct the violation(s). This notice may be as simple as a visit from a Code Compliance Officer or as difficult as sending notice via certified mail, posting or publishing the notice in the local newspaper. Regardless of the type of service for the Respondent(s) in your particular case, please know that your complaint is important and is being handled in an appropriate manner. You should direct specific inquiries to the Code Compliance Division.

  • Yes- Lake Wales Code of Ordinances prohibits allowing debris, rubbish, trash, stagnant water, diseased or damaged trees, dense growth of vines, underbrush, weeds, or grass in excess of 12 inches in height from the ground on any lot having an aggregate size of 10 acres or less. If you know of such a property, please notify the Code Compliance Division.

  • It shall be unlawful to park overnight or leave unattended during the day any commercial vehicle in a residential district of this city. This prohibition shall not include those commercial collecting or delivering persons or property in the normal course of business, any authorized emergency vehicle when operated in an official capacity. 


    A Commercial vehicle is defined as any self-propelled or towed vehicle used on the public highways in commerce to transport passengers or cargo, if such vehicle: 

    a) has a gross vehicle weight rating of ten thousand pounds or more

    b) is designed to transport more than fifteen passengers, including the driver; or

    c) is used in the transportation of materials found to be hazardous for the purposes of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act, as amended (49 U.S.C. § 1801 et seq.).

  • NO- A vehicle or vessel, or parts thereof, shall be deemed to be derelict if the vehicle or vessel is unlicensed, inoperable to the extent that it is unable to perform its original intended function; is partially or wholly dismantled, is in a condition that prevents legal operation, is junked or intended to be recycled, or scrapped unless the vehicle/vessel is in an enclosed building, is on the premises of a business enterprise operated in a lawful place and manner, is in an appropriate storage or depository facility maintained in a lawful place and manner, is covered by an intact custom vehicle or vessel cover made for the specific type and size of vehicle or vessel which it covers. One custom covered vehicle or vessel on residential property or two custom covered vehicles, vessels, or combination thereof on nonresidential property.

  • Depending on the types of deficiencies, the Code Compliance Division may be able to help. Please note, however, that neither the Code Compliance Division nor the City of Lake Wales have the authority to intervene in a landlord/tenant dispute. Code Compliance Officers will work with both parties to correct all violations of the City's Code of Ordinances.

  • No- Anyone who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace any impact-resistant coverings, electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by this code, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit as required by the Florida Building Code and City Code of Ordinances.

Depending on the case, it may result in citations, fines, and/or liens not to exceed two hundred fifty ($250) per day, per violation for each day the violation exists, ($500) per day, per violation for each day the violation exists if a repeat offender, Code Enforcement Board action and/or The City may abate the violation(s) and the cost of the abatement will be charged to the owner of the property or assessed against the land upon which the violation(s) exists or both.

  • Under the permits and inspections page, click on "Forms and Checklists" and look for the "Contractor’s Information Sheet". Depending on if your license holder is REGISTERED or CERTIFIED with the State of Florida will determine the side of the form you will need to fill out. Please send in supporting documents along with the "Contractor’s Information Sheet" to permitting@lakewalesfl.gov OR fax the information to 863-678-4050. There is no fee to register at this time. Once you are registered, you may then pull permits with the City of Lake Wales Building Department.

  • The City of Lake Wales Building Department does not keep property surveys on file unless they are associated with a previous building permit which required a site survey. Our office only keeps permit files for ten years after date of completion. If there are no previous permits for your property, you will need to hire a site surveyor.
