Bok Tower Gardens, The Singing Tower and Carillon

City Administration Posted on April 28, 2023

Bok Tower Gardens might still be a sand hill, if not for the contributions of Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., the most distinguished landscape architect of his time. As a native of Holland, Bok appreciated the acceptance he received in the U.S. and wanted to give back in a lasting way. Having become acquainted with Edward Bok at Mountain Lake, in 1923, Olmsted Jr. began the development of the beautiful garden sanctuaries we see at Bok Tower.

The 5-year project included planting a combination of native and exotic plants that were sustainable in the Lake Wales humid climate. Plants were also chosen for the food and shelter they could provide to birds and wildlife. Bok’s legacy, including the carillon known as “Singing Tower,” is world renown, drawing visitors from all over the world.
