City Administration Posted on February 16, 2024

Zora Neale Hurston, coined the founding mother of musicology was celebrated at the Lake Wales Public Library. Community members and City staff joined Dr. Panayotis from Florida State College to hear his presentation on Zora’s life and legacy. Participants learned about Zora’s training in cultural anthropology to the pioneering fieldwork she conducted in the 1930s.  Zora was a novelist, playwright and singer – she was engaged in the Harlem Renaissance era.

The presentation was brought to Lake Wales by the Florida Talks program through a partnership between Florida Humanities and Lake Wales Library Association. Funding for this program was provided by Florida Humanities and sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
