The City of Lake Wales Public Works Department is scheduled to start one of many phases in its pavement management program.
Crews are scheduled to start improving portions of select streets beginning December 14. The streets include: Dr. J.A. Wiltshire Boulevard, Sessoms Avenue, Bullard Avenue, Sharp Street, Johnson Avenue, Briggs Avenue and Miami Street. Work will be performed by Asphalt Paving Systems of Zephyrhills costing nearly $600,000.
City Manager James Slaton said, “Our pavement management program, created in 2019, is fully funded for the first time this year.”
The program includes an inventory of streets and current condition ratings that will help guide staff through the program. Four types of pavement treatment methods will be used to improve the conditions of the streets.
“Spending the extra time to closely assess each street allowed us to prescribe pavement treatment methods matched to each street's individual Pavement Condition Index rating, allowing us to cost-effectively improve more streets,” Slaton mentioned.
As the program progresses in 2023, eleven streets have been prioritized to receive improvements. More streets are scheduled to be improved in the first quarter of next year.
The pavement management program is a multi-year program. The work will cause minor delays and inconveniences. During work hours, limited access to the roads will be maintained. Access to roads will be coordinated by the workers onsite and people directing traffic. During non-working hours, motorists will have full access to the roads being resurfaced.
