Citizens in the Northwest Neighborhood will soon have access to new and enhanced sidewalks with new landscaping on designated streets: Alabama Street, Booker Avenue, Dr. J.A. Wiltshire Avenue, E Street, F Street, Florida Avenue, G Street, Harding Avenue, Jewel Street, W. Jackson Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Pearl Street and Washington Avenue.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set to take place on August 23 at the Northwest Sports Complex – Fraser Field on Florida Avenue in Lake Wales. The event starts at 9 a.m.
Construction plans include rehabilitating preexisting sidewalks. New sidewalks will be added along established streets without sidewalks. The project will help improve pedestrian safety. It’s action step number 11 in the City’s Lake Wales Connected Plan.
“Pedestrian safety is a big priority for the City,” said City Manager James Slaton.
City staff identified a pedestrian safety concern for residents living in the Northwest Neighborhood. Staff applied for a state grant and was awarded funding to improve the infrastructure in the Northwest Neighborhood.
Lake Wales was one of ten Florida communities to receive funding through the Rural Infrastructure Fund and the Community Development Block Grant – CV program, administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
A pre-construction community meeting is set for August 22 at 6 p.m. at the B Street Community Center. Citizens will get the chance to ask questions and hear from City staff and project consultants. Citizens who live on the designated streets will be contacted by City staff and crews prior to construction.
