Section 106 is part of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, or NHPA. The term “historic property” is a specific codified term and refers to any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure or object included in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The Section 106 process is designed to help communities find creative, effective ways to accommodate and balance needed development and the benefits of historic preservation through consultations and discussions among affected and interested parties.
