Continuous Process Improvement Initiative


The City of Lake Wales is committed to good stewardship of taxpayer investments through effective and efficient delivery of community services and strives continually to improve those services as part of our commitment to excellence.

Lean Six Sigma is a combination of two popular methodologies, Lean and Six Sigma. Together, Lean Six Sigma helps organizations achieve operational excellence. Lean focuses on how to eliminate the “waste” in an organization, while Six Sigma focuses on increasing performance while decreasing variations found within a process.

The City’s Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Initiative takes aim at the common “8 Types of Waste”. These wastes include Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-Utilized Talent, Transportation, Excess Inventory, Motion, and Excess Processing.
D Defects Include errors, rework and fixing issues
O Overproduction Making more of something such as extra copies or carrying redundant storage
W Waiting For people, information or equipment
N Non-Utilized Talent Not utilizing people’s experience, skills, knowledge or creativity
T Transportation Unnecessary movement of materials, information or equipment 
I Inventory Accumulation of parts, information, applications, equipment & more
M Motion Movement by people that is not of value such as switching between applications & walking between equipment 
E Excess Processing Non-Value add steps such as unnecessary fields on a form
